Inspired By Art & Copy

Today our class went to see a film titled Art & Copy at the Cinematheque. I was thoroughly impressed and inspired by the film. I have been wavering and wondering if I made the right decision by going into advertising next year. But during the film I was reminded of how interested I am in this exciting field, and anticipating next year with great expectations.

This film lets us inside the advertising world to meet some of the most successful creatives of our time, such as Dan Weiden, Lee Clow, and Hal Riney. They are responsible for famous campaigns, including: Nike's "Just Do It", the "Got Milk" campaign and iPod's dancing campaign. The film is very interesting, with all of the advertising statistics and sides of the advertising world you don't usually see. I would wager to say that even if you don't know much about advertising you will still enjoy it because you are submersed in it every day.

Fresh Air

This is the cover page of the very first issue of Fresh Air, a camping/outdoor magazine my group created in school. The magazine is geared towards young adults who are interested in the outdoors and camping. It also targets young adults who want to to start camping more often, and have little or no outdoor experience. The magazine does not discriminate.

Come check out the magazine's launch at the Princess Street Red River College Atrium on April 1st! It will be a magazine fair where talented groups display their amazing magazines of all different interests, hobbies and topics.

The Fresh Air booth will be fun and exciting as there will be a celebrity appearance you won't want to miss! Come roast a marshmallow and enjoy a smore!

Travel Advertising

We created travel ads in our advertising class last week. While doing my own research (AKA. searching the web for travel ad concepts) I came across these two that I really liked! I think they are perfect examples of thinking outside of the 'box'.

And now I will show you the one I created for Falcon Lake, MB for my assignment. Drum roll please...

Proud To Be Canadian

The games kicked off with an embarassing pillar malfunction as well as hockey legend Wayne Gretzky lighting the beautiful couldron. Soon after, Alexandre Bilodeau received Canada's first gold medal of the 2010 Olympic games. Fast forward two weeks later and the Olympics are a blur. All of the golden moments mesh together, but you can't help but remember the BIG ones that stand out as MOMENTOUS, MAGNIFICENT, MAGICAL.

The PRIDE and PASSION Canadians felt when the men's hockey team won gold was chilling. Every street corner in every city was littered with red and white flags and honking horns. It was INCREDIBLE to feel so proud to be Canadian! As you probably know, our country broke a world record for the highest gold medal count achieved by one country at a single winter Olympics.

It is sad to turn on the tube and not see MEN'S SUPER G ALPINE MOGUL SLALOM EXTREME. But all good things must come to an end and Canada had the BEST ending to the games! I can't help but be EVEN more proud of our beautiful country and the amazing athletes, even more: PEOPLE that represent our country.

Twitter: Helpful of Useless?

One of my friends asked me the other day what the purpose of Twitter is. And he stumped me. I hadn't really thought about it, and wasn't prepared to come up with an answer to his question.

I took a moment to think about it, and this is how I replied:

"Twitter can be completely useless to some, and super helpful for others."

I explained to him that I am still learning to use Twitter strategically myself, but from what I've learned it can be an extremely useful tool for businesses, organizations and anyone else who wants to get some publicity.

Facebook is a more personal form of social media and can be used by people to connect with friends. But, it too can be used as a media tool. Social media is a quick and easy way to get the word out to hundreds of people with one click.

From my personal experience, I see people use Facebook mostly to connect with friends and family through messages and photos. However, it is a convenient way to publicize events and groups. I see Twitter being used to connect people through news and links that they think others will appreciate. But, don't be fooled. Twitter is used multiple times within minutes by people who post utterly useless messages about their day-to-day activities. I am still unsure of how this is helpful to others within 140 characters.

Books Can Change Your Life

If you're looking for the next book to put on your reading list, I have just the one! A few weeks ago, I sat down and read Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom.
It was an eye opening experience and I feel it really did change the way I look at life.

Many times I've heard Oprah and others say, "this book will change your life", and it has always seemed like a stretch to me. But, Tuesdays with Morrie proved me wrong. It was a fantastic book written by a sports journalist and his real life experience with Morrie, a wise man in his last days.

The book reminded me to appreciate the simple things in life, like watching the sunrise and taking a walk in the park. I would recommend everyone to sit down and take the time to read this short book of Morrie's teachings on life.

Albom also wrote other wonderful books, to check them out visit his website.
